With the US dollar (USD) / Japanese yen (JPY) having taken such a sharp fall since early August, the correlation with risk has been substantially weakened. Since June, equity markets have experienced a consistent bull trend and show no signs of reversing any time soon. This divergence is viewed as an explanation for the lose of correlation. Due to this, the dollar has come to replace the yen as the top choice in funding currency and created difficult for those wishing to predict the yen’s movement. Traditionally, the yen keeps a negative relationship to risk because the Bank of Japan keeps rates very low to raise demand for exports.
A new political administration could potentially change this traditional risk relationship for the yen because those now in power have long proclaimed the benefits of a stronger yen while campaigning for election. On the other hand, US policy decisions have begun to have increasing influence on price action and may change whether or not the dollar ends up being a funding currency. New Financial Minister Hirohisa Fuji has publicly announced that he does not support a weak yen, and the Democratic Party of Japan is expected to push for

Ballymun, one of Ireland’s most deprived regions, is set to receive development in the sum of 800 million euros ($1.2 billion) in the form of a regeneration project to be carried out by Real Estate Opportunities plc (REO). The project will cover a 225,000 square metre area and begin construction in 2010 provided the funding is properly secured according to plan.
This project would be an enormous boon to Ireland’s sluggish construction sector and according to some experts, the largest project planning permission of its kind ever enacted in the nation. Ballymun, which lies very close to Dublin Airport, has recently welcomed Ireland’s first IKEA furniture store, but this project would bring in offices, shops and a cinema operated by a major international specialty company.
Over 2,000 jobs will be created by the project with stores possibly favoring the project over Ballymun’s older shopping centre, however some worry that the government’s planned National Asset Management Agency 54 billion euro proposal to bail out banks on high risk property loans could hinder this project.
The investment injection could be a very good thing for the flailing building and development sector, not only in the Republic of Ireland, but all across the globe. With investors currently hesitant to invest in development, local experts see this move by REO as a strong vote of confidence not only for the construction sector, but Ireland’s economy in general.

Leading Internet search engine giant Google Inc. has acquired ReCaptcha, a company that that creates software designed to prevent fraud and spam for sites such as Ticketmaster.com and other online enterprises that rely on digital verification systems in order to perform transactions.
In its blog, Google announced that it plans to use the software technology to protect its Web surfers and prevent both fraud and the spam that has become a bane of the company’s existence as malicious programmers have grown more bold in their attempts to fleece large scale e-commerce enterprises. Google also intends to employ the software to improve the scanning of books and newspapers for its written word archiving project.
ReCaptcha software is used on over 100,000 sites worldwide and provides web sites with what are called captchas, programs designed to digitally determine whether a user is human or a machine. The software works by providing a visually distorted image of a word or phrase and requiring the user to type that into the box in order to proceed. The system blocks out spammers and those employing mass fraud techniques because a machine can normally not detect letters due to the warping the captcha employs.
The announcement lead to a rise of $10.75 per share in Google stock which currently sits at $488.29 on the NASDAQ Stock Market.
